Physical Impairment and Medical Support Team (PIMST)

Service Information:

The PIMST is part of the SPOT (Sensory, Physical and Occupational Therapy) service, SEND & Inclusion support Somerset. The PIMS team works with children and young people (C&YP) from birth up to 18 years old, and advice on support for young people up to 25 in educational setting.

We are a team of advisory teachers; we have all held the role of SENCO in either nursery/ primary/middle/secondary/post 16 settings. All members of our team have had direct experience in supporting the needs of children and young people with a wide range of physical and medical conditions.

SENATAS – Special Educational Needs Assistive Technology Advisory Service is part of our team and includes an IT Advisor and Support Assistant Advisor, who have had over 20 years’ experience of providing support in education settings for pupils with complex needs. This is an integral part of PIMST and offers an assessment and advisory service for all children and young people with complex needs, who may require alternative recording methods or communication aids.

We visit children and young people in their homes, pre-school settings, schools and colleges in and beyond Somerset.

We provide information to children and young people, parents, carers and staff about the effects of physical impairments and/or medical needs, and strategies to support access to learning and independence.

We offer support, training and advice for children and young people, parents/carers and staff in order to be sure the requirements of your child or young person are planned for in all settings and at transition.

We offer advice and training about meeting the needs of children with recording, communication and assistive technology requirements.

We provide advice and support access to assistive devices such as communication aids and specialist IT equipment.
